Recent Bugs

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or AOL 3.0 Browsers -- We recently corrected a problem that affected using MSIE 3.0 or AOL 3.0 browsers with the add listing and search listing functions in several areas. If you have one of these browsers and still experience problems, please be sure to delete your browser cache files and RELOAD.

  • Company Names with Apostrophes -- We recently corrected a problem with Company Names that had an apostrophe (single quote) in the name. If you want to include an apostrophe in your Company Name, you may now do so. If you have a listing and wish to change the company name, first search for your existing entry and then use the change link to update it.

  • Company Names with Double Quotes or Ampersands -- Please do not use double quotes (") or ampersands (&) in the Company Name as these are reserved characters. If you do so, you will not be able to complete the ADD or CHANGE process for your listing.

  • If you wish to report a bug -- Please use our contact form. Thank you!

Adding a Listing -- see also Changing a Listing

  • Adding information to my listing -- If you are trying to add a phone number, email address, categories, or other information to your listing, you are not ADDING, you are CHANGING your listing. Use the CHANGE form.

  • Company Names -- Company name is the key to the listing. If you leave this field blank or use an invalid character (double quote (") or ampersand (&) ), your listing will not add properly.

  • Categories not showing up on the add category page -- Your Internet connection and Web browser may load the categories very slowly and may time out during the process. Try using the RELOAD button or delete your browser cache files (under Preferences...Advanced...View Files) and try again. Otherwise, try when it is not a peak time or get a better browser.

Changing a Listing

  • To change information in your listing -- simply search for your listing, click on the CHANGE (C) link next to it, and then follow the instructions for changing information for that company name.

  • Company Names -- Company name is the key to the listing. You can change the company name using a special company name change form. Simply search for your listing as it is currently named, click on the CHANGE (C) link next to it, and then follow the instructions for changing a company name.

  • Changing/adding categories -- When you change your listing and you arrive at the page to change your categories, you must select (or re-select) all categories (up to 5) as the new selections will replace the old ones.

  • Some keywords added don't work -- To see the keywords that are added on your listing, look at your listing detailed page (use the MORE link next to the listing). The keywords are listed near the bottom of this page. If some keywords are missing, you may have exceeded the 150 characters allowed (includes spaces).

If you see the keyword there, it may be the way you are using the keyword to search. See the search help page.

  • I don't have a MORE link next to my listing -- the MORE link is triggered when you supply an email address and phone number for the Web site listed. Simply search for your listing, click on the CHANGE (C) link next to it, and then follow the instructions for changing your listing and be sure to add all of the information to trigger all of the available features.

  • The Location Map Does Not Appear or the Location is Wrong -- We use ExpediaMaps to bring you this feature. How accurately this works depends upon how you enter the Street, City, State and Zip Code for your location. For instance, suite numbers need to be last on the Street Address line or sometimes omitted. To try out different address formats, use our handy Map Locator form. If you have encountered a bug with the mapping, contact ExpediaMaps Technical Support directly.

Links to Web Sites in the Listings

  • If you want to view a Web site outside of RIYP in the "top frame" simply go to the listing detail page (click on the MORE link next to the listing) and click on the URL link there (look for the purple "W" icon).

  • If the listing does not have a MORE link, it is because no detail information was provided for this listing by the site owner. However, your browser provides ways for you to control whether a link you click on "targets" the current frame or the "top" frame. Refer to your browser documentation available through the browser Help menu, or see "Frames" under our Browsers FAQ.

Government Listings

Browsers

  • Cache -- If you do not know how to delete your cache files (or what cache is), it is time to learn. When a browser reads a Web page, in many instances it will keep a copy of the page and the graphics, audio files, etc. on your hard drive in a cache folder (directory). Should you return to that page, the browser may use this copy to load it faster. Typically RELOAD or REFRESH forces the browser to get a new copy from the Web site, but this does not always work properly. Also, when your cache folder gets full, it takes longer to look there than to go get a new copy from the Web site.

This is why you should periodically delete or purge your cache files. Also delete them if you are not getting the latest copy of a page or if pages are loading very slowly.

Instructions for deleting your cache files:

    Netscape users:

Go to Edit.. Preferences.. Advanced and clear memory and hard drive cache.

Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) 4.0 users:

    1. Under the MSIE browser View menu select Internet Options
    2. Select the General tab
    3. Select the Delete Files button
    4. You do not need to check the "delete subscription content" box
    5. Select OK and then OK
    6. Return to Web browser window and click on the Refresh icon (the circular clockwise arrow icon on the top left) to get new pages for the site you were viewing.

    AOL 4.0 users:

    1. Go to the Web and under My AOL at the top menu select Preferences
    2. Select the WWW icon
    3. Select the General tab
    4. Select the Delete Files button
    5. You do not need to check the "delete subscription content" box
    6. Select OK and then OK
    7. Return to Web browser window and click on the Refresh icon (the circular clockwise arrow icon on the top left) to get new pages for the site you were viewing.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or AOL 3.0 users:

You can find the option for deleting cache files under the browser Advanced Options or Preferences (MSIE 3.0 -- View.. Options.. Advanced.. View Files). Select all of the files in the list and delete them.

  • Screen Size -- Many people do not know how to adjust their viewing area size and colors. The standard for designing a Web page is quickly moving to the 17" monitor running Windows 98 or NT with the resolution set at 600X800 or higher and the color set at 16 bit High Color or greater. Your settings will vary or be limited depending upon the video card you have installed.

For Windows 95 users, go to the Windows Start menu and select Settings.. Control Panel.. Display and choose the Settings tab. There you will see options for changing the color palette (go higher than 256 colors if you can) and the resolution (if you are set at 480X640 try 600X800). When you change these settings it is recommended that you close your other applications and then reboot your PC to make sure they properly take effect. Try browsing Web sites with the new settings -- a big difference!

  • Printing from Browser -- If the words get cut off to the right of your page when printing a Web page, check the printer margin settings for the browser under File.. Page Setup. If you have a HP DeskJet, change these all to .50 inch and try again.

If you are trying to print a page inside frames, click on the body of the frame first so that it is the "selected" frame. Then choose Print Frame (or Page). See next item for more on "Frames."

  • Frames -- The newer browsers have new RIGHT mouse button menus that pop-up providing lots of options that make using frames very handy. (If you have only one mouse button, HOLD the button down). Use the RIGHT mouse button to click on an image to get options for that image. Use it to click on a link and get options for that link, such as Open in New Window. These features allow you to get out of frames if you prefer to or to bookmark the exact page or frame.

  • Fonts -- You can download some exciting new fonts for free at Microsoft's Web site and follow their instructions to make them available on your PC or Mac. Many Web pages use these fonts, such as the friendly Comic Sans used by Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream.

  • AOL -- America Online has a built-in browser, which is not the best choice. The AOL menu buttons take up extra space on your screen, so the viewing area is smaller. You can use your AOL account to access the Internet and use a different browser with the AOL connection to achieve a more powerful browsing experience. The best browser is also FREE (see Netscape below).

AOL 4.0 is now available, but when you install it it will install Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 along with the Active Desktop -- so beware! (see note under Microsoft Internet Explorer below).

We are seeing some problems with viewing graphics, but the fix is here!

  • Netscape -- If you have Netscape Communicator 4.05 or higher, you should do well. However, be sure to get the free E-mail security fix. We have seen bugs with loading animated graphics and graphics with transparent backgrounds in various versions, which usually correct themselves once you scroll through the page and back.

If you have Netscape 4.0 to 4.01 you should upgrade, as many bugs related to printing and crashing were resolved since these versions. If you have Netscape 3.x your browser may work fine with this site. Also if you upgrade to Netscape 4.0 you will have to retrieve new plugins when prompted, but the new ones are well worth the effort (especially the new RealAudio G2 player).

AOL users: Download Netscape Communicator for free from (www.netscape.com) and it will work just fine with AOL! AOL users can use Netscape as an add-on to AOL by minimizing the AOL window and then opening the Netscape browser from the Windows desktop.

  • Miscrosoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) -- If you have MSIE 3.0 you will miss out on many automated and animated features. But beware when going to MSIE 4.0 -- we recommend you only install the browser and not the active desktop features until you have reason to. They may affect your other software applications and the uninstall does not work properly.

We are seeing some problems with viewing graphics, but the fix is here:

How to Improve Graphics with Microsoft Internet Explorer

Note: These instructions are for version 4 of MSIE and/or AOL, but similar steps will work with version 3.0 or you can download Netscape Communicator for free from (www.netscape.com) and it will work just fine! AOL users can use Netscape as an add-on to AOL by minimizing the AOL window and then opening the Netscape browser from the Windows desktop.

Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) 4.0 users:

    1. Under the MSIE browser View menu select Internet Options
    2. Select the Advanced tab and under the Multimedia Options uncheck "Smart image dithering" -- (it's not very smart when it comes to high resolution JPEG images!)
    3. Select Apply and refresh your page to get improved graphics!

Note: initial loading of the images will be slower, but we reuse the main graphics throughout the site so you should only have to wait the first time you load the images.

    AOL 4.0 users:

    1. Go to the Web and under My AOL at the top menu select Preferences
    2. Select the WWW icon
    3. Select the Web Graphics tab
    4. Uncheck "Use compressed graphics" and then select Apply
    5. Under the WWW icon select the General tab
    6. Select the Delete Files button
    7. You do not need to check the "delete subscription content" box
    8. Select OK and then OK
    9. Return to Web browser window and click on the Refresh icon (the circular clockwise arrow icon on the top left) to get improved graphics!
